Mamma Mia, Mother’s Day again! 9th May 2021 - Boutique Wine and Champagne

Who does not want to honour their mother?

There is never a bad day to honour mothers and most countries around the world celebrate some form of Mother’s Day.

Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Denmark, India, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland are just some of the countries which chose to honour mothers on the second Sunday of May. The UK celebrates Mother’s Day on the 4th Sunday of Lent, along with Nigeria. Thailand celebrates Mother’s Day on 12th August, the date of its Queen’s birthday.

Have a look at if you would like to see dates for Mother’s Day around the world.

Modern Mother’s Day is said to have started in the USA.

The mother of a certain Anna Jarvis had been involved in the establishment of “Mothers Friendship Day” which was designed to facilitate the necessary healing after the American Civil War. Anna had the idea to dedicate a special day to honour all mothers.

Anna and her followers lobbied to establish Mother’s Day and in 1914, the President of the USA, Woodrow Wilson established the second Sunday of May as a national holiday, honouring all mothers.

Sadly, unlike the USA, it is not a national holiday elsewhere, but we do not need it to be a national holiday to make it special for our mums.

Flowers are sure to be appreciated by mothers and indeed, Anna Jarvis would distribute white carnations on Mother’s Day, her mother’s favourite flower.

Perhaps in addition to a bouquet of flowers, a glass of champagne to toast your mum would be much appreciated.
