RUTHERGLEN ESTATE SPARKLING SHIRAZ DURIF 2024

This sparkling shiraz durif has a deep dark red color and vibrant red hues, along with a creamy mouth-filling mousse. The flavors of fresh red berries, chocolate, and spice are well-balanced with the chalky tannins and residual sweetness. Aromas of red berries and spice dominate, with hints of darker berries and chocolate present due to some of the blend being aged in older oak for added complexity.

VINEYARD

The Shiraz is grown on the De Bortoli Burgoyne’s and Shelley’s vineyards on the eastern edge of the Rutherglen region. The Durif component is sourced from selected blocks on the Shelley’s vineyard. Both sites have an interesting gravel, clay and alluvial soil mix, resulting in a positive diversity of fruit flavour profiles.

WINEMAKING

Parcels of 2024 Shiraz and Durif were selected for their suitable flavour profiles and tannin structure. Richness of fruit with great balance, freshness, and softness of tannins were most desired. The Shiraz brings the fresh fruit profile whilst the Durif adds the weight, plushness and chocolate characters. The mousse and bead are added to complement the mouthfeel and texture of the wine. The sweetness was adjusted to balance the palate and the consistency of the wine, delivering an enjoyable versatile sparkling.

Deep, bold, youthful purple-red colour; the aromas likewise fresh and fruity, youthfully simple and has a sweet cassis, cabernet-like fruit character. It's big and generous on the palate, with a big tannin grip that imparts a lot of bitterness. A very bold, very sweet, young style of sparkling red.
