The mouth feel is soft and balanced with well ripened dark berry fruits combined with green peppery spices and elegant Shiraz tannins. A unique and quite refined version of the typically gutsy, spicy Rutherglen Shiraz.

SEASON

A cooler and slightly wetter than average winter delayed the start of the growing season in Rutherglen, however once it began the vineyards experienced regular rainfall and warm temperatures throughout the spring.

WINEMAKING

Selected from some of the most prized Shiraz vineyards on the Estate, the 2018 Shiraz is partially crushed into small, temperature controlled vats. Ten percent of the fruit is handpicked and is added to ferment as whole bunches. This small amount of stems help give a complex tannin structure. The fruit is cold soaked prior to alcohol fermentation to keep a bright and vibrant fruit profile. A small percentage of Viognier is added to help lift aromatics and freshness which is evident in this vintage! The wine is aged in French and American oak to give tightness and roundness on the palate whilst helping to give complexity in all areas.

FOOD RECOMMENDATION

Shiraz is a great match for many styles of food, we prefer grilled or roast beef, especially when served rare or with a peppery sauce. It is also great with hard cheeses such as cheddar.

REVIEWS

The reach of De Bortoli steadily increases, Rutherglen Estate acquired in Dec ‘18, bringing with it 184ha of vineyard planted since ‘97. This ultra-full-bodied wine was fermented and matured before the acquisition, and it will be interesting to find out how much is sold domestically, and how much to China. 90/100.
